STEP 3

To choose the most natural-looking shade of foundation, colour-match it to your neck and jawline instead of your face. Look for a formula that promotes luminosity or radiance and that has buildable Coverage.

STEP 4

For example, choosing an oily cleanser can trigger breakouts and acne. Everyone‘s skin is different and the products you use on your face can exacerbate skin conditions, such as acne or dehydration.

What should we look for when choosing a cleanser?

If you have oilier skin, you’d look for an oil-free cleanser that won’t block the pores. For those with dry skin, you’d want a cleanser with hydrating ingredients. Mature skin also tends to be drier, so it can benefit from hydrating and plumping ingredients, too.

A cleanser with hyaluronic acid in the formula, like Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleanser, is a great all-rounder. It really hydrates the skin and keeps it plump to give you a more youthful complexion.

How should your skin feel after cleansing?

It should feel soft, hydrated and clean. It should never feel tight – that means your cleanser is drying out your skin. Even if you have oily skin, you don’t want it to feel dry and tight after washing your face.

Is it necessary to cleanse in the morning or is it okay just to splash your face with water?

I would recommend cleansing your skin in the morning because when we’re sleeping there’s an overnight build-up of bacteria and dead skin – it’s a prime time for this build-up to occur.

A splash of water alone won’t be enough to remove it. Plus, many of us use a heavy night cream or night mask and if you don’t wash that off, it can create a build-up of oil during the day.

Can you stick with the same cleanser all year round or should it be changed seasonally?

Cleansers should be changed seasonally because your skin changes. I find that in the winter months, my skin gets very dry, so I use a cleanser that’s more hydrating, along with thicker and heavier cream.

Should men use a cleanser that’s formulated specifically for them?

Typically, I would recommend men use a male-specific cleanser. They tend to have tougher and oilier skin due to the increased amount of collagen in their dermis (the inner layer of the skin).

They also shave their faces frequently, which has an exfoliating effect on the skin. Men’s cleansers are formulated specifically to meet these needs.
